This paper describes the development by the TIA Working Group FO-2.2.1 of new multimode fiber specifications for high speed application in data communications. The specific application used as an example uses 50 mum graded index multimode fiber over 300 meters operating at 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) (e.g. 10 Gbps Ethernet and Fibre Channel). The link performance is determined by the interaction of the fiber intermodal dispersion as measured by the differential modal delay (DMD) and the transceiver launch distribution into the multimode fiber as measured by encircled flux (EF). A theoretically based model was used to simulate 40,000 links. This information was used to determine the specification limits. The model and simulation are described.
