Digital speech processing - Problems of today and challenges of tomorrow.
01 January 1986
The field of digital speech processing includes the areas of speech coding, speech synthesis, and speech recognition. With the advent of faster computation and high speed VLSI circuits, speech processing algorithms are becoming more sophisticated, more robust, and more reliable. As a result, significant advances have been made in coding, synthesis, and recognition, but, in each area, there still remain great challenges in harnessing speech technology to human needs. In this paper we outline key ideas in coding, synthesis, and recognition, review successes achieved to date, and discuss issues that must still be addressed.
