This chapter discusses the modeling and dimensioning aspects of a mobile backhaul (MBH) serving long‐term evolution (LTE) U‐plane traffic. MBH networks should be dimensioned to provide reliable service to the users. The dimensioning of the MBH is an iterative and complex process, requiring the use of dedicated models capable of capturing the relevant behavioral aspects of the user (mobility, traffic demand, etc.), the traffic (including the applications) and the network. The chapter provides an overview of the dimensioning paradigm, quality of service (QoS) and reliability driven approaches, the quality of experience (QoE) considerations, multiplexing gain, traffic and network modeling. The analytical performance (quality) analysis of LTE MBH has to deal with two distinct modeling problems that both require special modeling approach due to the dual nature of the traffic mix served by packet based radio access networks.
