A method is described for discontinuity detection in pictorial data. It computes at each point a planar approximation of the data and uses the statistics of the differences between the actual values and the approximations for detection of both steps and creases. The use of local statistical properties in the residuals provides a detection method that is sensitive to the local context of the data, and avoids the use of arbitrary thresholds.
