Distributed Feedback and Distributed Bragg Reflector Lasers: Comparisons of Performance and Applications

Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers have historically offered both high performance and relative fabrication ease. Advances in InGaAsP/InP crystal growth techniques now permit the reproducible fabrication of high performance distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers as well. The design strengths and natural areas of application for these two laser geometries will be reviewed with an eye towards the future.
