The design and performance of a new type high resolution, high transmission soft x-ray monochromator are presented. This new beamline, which was dubbed Dragon and located at the National Synchrotron Light Source in the USA has achieved unprecedented high resolving power in the soft x-ray region. A simple design procedure for this type of monochromators and its advantages over existing ones are discussed in detail. The application of high resolution soft x-ray synchrotron spectroscopies to the various fields such as, atomic and molecular physics, surface and interface science, and solid state physics is addressed and examples are given.
