Effect of Excited States on the Metal-Insulator Transition

We use Gutzwiller's variational method to study a modified Hubbard model with a low-lying excited state on each site. Particular attention is paid to changes in the metal-insulator transition when there is one- electron per site. Comparison is made with results obtained using conventional band and Mott screening arguments.
