Pixel Loss Rate: a KQI for video QoE measurement in 5G networks
20 November 2017
In this paper we propose piXel Loss Rate (XLR), a novel Key Quality Indicator for the measurement and planning of video QoE in 5G networks. Unlike plain network-based measures like Packet Loss Rate, XLR captures the effect of network errors in the received video. We have shown that its linear-dimension aggregation, Mean Square-root of XLR (MSXLR) correlates with subjective MOS in a way which is comparable to state-of-the-art pixel-based Full Reference metrics. However, XLR can be estimated with high precision for any transmission error, regardless the specific codec implementation, using only no-reference information easily extracted from the bit stream. For those reasons it is a good KQI for low-latency and high-throughput video communications, such as the ones existing in next-generation 5G systems
