One of the early giants in our field was W.A. Shewhart, who invented the control chart. He worked in the Inspection Engineering Department of Western Electric, then the manufacturing arm of the Bell System, which was situated in Kearny until January 1, 1925, when it moved to West Street in New York as part of the newly-formed Bell Laboratories.
