Optical Data Center Interconnect
Implement business-critical data center interconnect to support your enterprise private/hybrid cloud
As data volumes continue to increase, and you consolidate and virtualize your data centers, you need data center interconnect (DCI) solutions that take full advantage of agile, flexible and dynamic cloud IT models.
Nokia DCI offers a more scalable, reliable and secure way to connect data centers in private/hybrid clouds.
Our optical DCI solutions provide business-critical connectivity to reduce the risk to your data – and your customers’ data. DCI helps you meet strict business continuity, regulatory and compliance requirements.
Trends in the digital market point to the need for continued rapid growth in capacity. Whether it is AI processing and analytics, the rollout of autonomous use cases in transportation and manufacturing, the deployment of 5G standalone services or residential PON access networks, capacity increases in DCI will continue over the next decade.
In an increasingly AI-automated world, the demand for reduced latency is also paramount, especially for autonomous and remote-control applications. Edge computing brings processing power closer to the source, enabling lightning-fast response times and robust local analytics.
Nokia business-critical optical DCI solutions support multiple DCI applications, from real-time business continuity and disaster recovery to synchronous data replication and cloud backup.
Optical DCI architectures
The most common method is to connect data centers through an optical physical layer with a traditional WDM line system and transponder interconnected to the IP network layer. This requires use of non-WDM modules on data center routers with an optical transponder in a separate chassis. For this option Nokia offers a range of Photonic Service Engines (PSEs) that are performance-optimized for capacity, reach and fiber efficiency. This method is utilized for high capacity, flexibility and long reach applications, up to and including intercontinental submarine links.
In applications where distance between data centers is in the metro-regional range, an emerging solution is to use pluggable Digital Coherent Optics (DCOs), directly in the router itself. These DCOs integrate high-speed optics and coherent detection within small pluggable modules. This enables routers to connect directly at high speeds over moderate link lengths without external transponder modules.
Securing data in-flight on the network and assuring integrity is essential maintaining trust of the network end users. Our DCI solutions support Quantum-Safe Networks (QSN). Utilizing a multi-layer, defense-in-depth approach, QSN provides multiple barriers to attack from a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. Through tools like AES 256-bit encryption and symmetric key distribution, classic or quantum mechanics entropy and orchestration among network layers, QSN provides the highest level of security at any data rate. Other physical layer tools such as optical intrusion detection, wavelength tracking and Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) technology help to detect and localize fiber cuts and network intrusions to complete a highly secure DCI solution.

Nokia Data Center Interconnection Fabric White Paper
Today’s costly, multiple, static networks require manual provisioning and intervention across multiple layers and domains. The white paper also describes how today’s networks must evolve rapidly to become a single automated, multi-layer data center interconnection (DCI) fabric that supports dynamic connectivity between edge and core cloud data centers.
