From everyday devices to invisible infrastructure: the evolution of IoT

When IoT comes up in the home, people tend to think of the same things. Smart speakers, connected lights, thermostats you can control from your phone. These devices are now part of households across the world and, for many, a fundamental part of how their home runs day to day.

Bringing ease and accessibility, the appetite for IoT devices only continues to grow. The number of connected IoT devices is expected to reach around 39 billion by 2030. But while these familiar examples show how IoT has entered everyday life, they don’t fully reflect where it is heading.

The next phase shifts from convenience to support – technologies that don’t just respond when asked but actively look out for people and places. From systems that can detect unusual activity in the home, to devices that help identify changes in health before they become serious, IoT is moving into something more meaningful.

From connected devices to systems you can rely on  

Early IoT was largely centred around individual devices. You bought the product, downloaded the app, and used it for one specific task – for example turning a light on and off. It worked, but depending on the number of devices, it usually meant managing a growing number of independent systems that didn’t always connect well. That fragmentation still exists in many homes.

What’s changing now is how IoT is used. Devices are increasingly expected to operate as part of a broader system, rather than on their own. They share information, respond to each other and, in many cases, operate without much direct input. When that works well, you notice it less. It becomes less about interacting with individual devices and more about systems and services that support things quietly overtime.

At the same time, improvements in connectivity are making these systems more dependable. As networks become more reliable and responsive, connected technologies are being used for more critical tasks, not just convenience. Increased reliability enables devices to be used in situations where timely information and consistent performance matter.

This has been a gradual shift, driven by steady progress in connectivity, computing and AI. None of these are new in isolation, but together they are making connected systems more consistent and easier to use, and increasingly trusted.

In that sense, IoT is becoming less visible as a category and more like underlying infrastructure. It is starting to sit underneath everyday experiences supporting how things work rather than adding new features.

Supporting everyday life

The impact of that shift is most visible in how everyday life is supported more reliably.

Systems are more proactive within the home. Leaks can be detected before they cause damage. Heating can adjust based on how spaces are used. Security systems can identify activity that looks suspicious. Individually, these are incremental improvements. These systems reduce the amount of attention needed to keep things running – and again, help prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems.

They also create a foundation for support to be provided on an ongoing basis. For example, in the home security context, connected devices can be combined with continuous monitoring and support. In healthcare, the same principles apply. A wearable device, such as a smartwatch or health monitor, can track indicators like activity, sleep, blood pressure or heart rate over time. This enables healthcare providers to build a clearer picture  than occasional check-ups alone – therefore making it easier to identify vital sign changes early and respond before issues develop.

For people living independently, connected systems can provide reassurance without being intrusive. A system might notice if someone hasn’t moved around the home as they usually would, or if a door hasn’t been opened at a typical time of day. It can then flag to friends, family and healthcare professionals that something may be out of the ordinary. People who may need additional support can still go about their day as normal, but the technology is there if something changes.

Across these examples, the value is not in any single device. It comes from how systems work together to remove friction, improve reliability and provide a level of reassurance that wasn’t there before.

What underpins the reliability of these systems

For these systems to function as reliable, everyday infrastructure, and to support more critical use cases, a number of things need to come together:

  1. Connectivity: Devices need to communicate consistently, whether over Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
  2. Interoperability: Systems need to work together across different manufacturers and platforms, rather than operating in isolation.
  3. Data: Information needs to be processed quickly and handled securely and with respect for privacy, so systems can respond in real time while maintaining trust.

This becomes especially important in situations where timing matters. For example, if a system is designed to detect unusual activity in the home – such as someone having a fall – delays, dropped connections or devices not working together properly can prevent help from reaching them when it’s needed.

IoT is no longer defined by adding more devices. 

It’s about systems working in a way that feels dependable and requires little attention. In many cases, the real value is simply knowing that things are working as they should – that your home is running normally and that you’ll be alerted if something changes when it matters. It’s not a dramatic shift, but it changes what IoT is – from something people can use to something they rely on.

Over time, this becomes something people expect – not something they actively think about, but something that works in the background.
