Error Analysis on Digital Transmission Systems
Satellites are expected to play an important role in the emerging ISDN, particularly in the international environment. Anticipating this role, the CCIR recently completed studies focused on performance of the Basic Rate ISDN bearer channel (64 kb/s) on international satellite connections. In this paper, we support the methods and results of the CCIR work and identify the issues associated with generalizing the B channel performance recommendation to any transmission rate. In the process, we establish an analytical method for defining error performance and recast the 64 kb/s recommendation of the CCIR. We then use this approach to define several alternative performance recommendations at the primary rate.
