RNP modernizes Brazil's research and education network for the AI era
A secure, automated and high-performance IP backbone will connect more than four million users and support AI-enabled research, scientific discovery and digital innovation across Brazil.
Overview
Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP) is Brazil's national research and education network and the largest in Latin America. RNP connects institutions, people, data and intelligence across Brazil and links to more than 125 academic networks in over 100 countries across the Americas, Europe and Africa.
Challenge
Brazil's research and education communities need a network that can keep pace with growing demand for data center connectivity, large-scale scientific collaboration, private wireless networks and AI-enabled applications.
RNP needed to modernize rede Ipê with a secure, resilient and scalable architecture that could support expanding traffic and advanced research while strengthening access to knowledge, digital inclusion and international collaboration.
Solution
RNP selected Nokia and Q13 to modernize rede Ipê as a secure, automated and high-performance IP network. The deployment will deliver 4.8 Tbps of aggregate capacity across more than 350 routers, creating a scalable IP backbone ready to evolve to 800G.
Nokia will provide core, aggregation, peering and universal provider edge capabilities using the 7750 Service Router and 7250 Interconnect Router platforms. Q13 will lead implementation and migration across the network.
The modernized network will connect more than four million users and provide a foundation for AI-enabled research, scientific discovery and digital innovation in areas including health, climate science, biodiversity and engineering.
Benefit
AI-ready capacity at national scale
A 4.8 Tbps backbone across more than 350 routers will connect over four million users and provide a scalable path to 800G.
Stronger research collaboration
Secure, reliable connectivity will support data-intensive science, digital inclusion and collaboration with academic networks around the world.
