A total of 68 binary through quintemary oxide arsenite glass compositions based on As sub 2 O sub 3 in combination with Sb sub 2O sub 3, Tl sub 2 O, PbO and/or Bi sub 2 O sub 3 were prepared. Glass and exothermic crystallization transition temperatures and thermal expansion coefficients were determined. Additional parameters were measured on the glass composition 40 AsO sub (1.5) .40 SbO sub (1.5) .20 TiO sub (0.5), including the transparency range, refractive indexes, Sellmeier coefficients, Brillouin and Raman scattering data, density, and the elastic constants. Peak Raman scattering values as high or even higher than those previously reported in germania-based heavy metal oxide glasses were observed, but the volatility of As sub 2 O sub 3 at the melting point of these glasses vitiates any possible advantage for Raman active fibers.
