From its early beginnings 150 years ago, facsimile transmission has had a slow growth until the late 1970s. International facsimile transmission standards have now spawned compatibility among different vendors' machines and this has increased the worldwide use of facsimile as a communications medium. Recent years have seen an explosion in the use of facsimile. The more expensive machines have greater flexibility and more features while low cost facsimile machines are becoming much more ubiquitous. New network services are now being introduced to enhance facsimile communications capabilities.
