INTRODUCTION: This paper describes technical and operational experiences and realities encountered in the early life cycle of commercial cellular radio systems in the United States. The paper does not attempt to discuss the marketing success of cellular service being provided in numerous US cities today, nor does it discuss the realities of the cellular federal and state regulatory process is in the US, although the regulatory function is the major influence on the status of cellular radio service in hundreds of US geographical areas.
