Microfabrication of Electronic Neural Networks
19 August 1986
As one of the first steps in our program to implement collective computation using microelectronic devices, we have made a number of chips, each containing a 22 x 22 array of wires ("axons" and "dendrites") with a pattern of resistive connections ("synapses") between them; the amplifiers and feedback paths are off-chip. The availability of these chips has made possible exhaustive studies of the dynamics of electronic neural networks. The measured performance agrees with results obtained from macroscopic resistor arrays and from numerical simulations. :
