altafiber expands its multi-gig fiber network across Ohio and Hawaii with Nokia

green field

Altafiber chose one Nokia foundation - Lightspan 25G PON, 7750 Service Router IP routing, 1830 PSS and PSI optical transport, and Nokia Deepfield security - to scale multi-gigabit broadband for residential and business customers across its Midwest footpri

Objective

altafiber is in the middle of a major multi-gigabit fiber buildout across its Midwest territories, including a geographic push into Northeast Ohio, and across Hawaii, where the company operates as Hawaiian Telcom. Hawaiian Telcom's broader initiative is on track to make Hawaii the first fully fiber-enabled state in the United States by the end of 2026.

To meet that goal, altafiber needed an end-to-end network foundation: a fixed-access platform that could scale rapidly while protecting existing fiber-infrastructure investments, a high-capacity IP backbone able to absorb the multi-gigabit data flows generated by next-generation services, the optical transport to underpin both, and an in-network security layer agile enough to keep pace with current and future broadband demand without becoming an operational drag.

Solution

altafiber selected Nokia for a comprehensive deployment that spans four product families on one architecture, working as a single end-to-end foundation rather than four parallel overlays. Each pillar is built from a named Nokia product and tied to the others through a common operational fabric.

Fixed access: The Nokia Lightspan 25G PON solution lets altafiber rapidly scale services and introduce differentiated multi-gigabit offerings on its existing fiber plant, while supporting the most demanding residential and business broadband requirements.

IP routing: Nokia 7750 Service Routers form the intelligent backbone of the upgraded network, ensuring efficient, resilient, and secure transport of all traffic - and absorbing the multi-gigabit flows generated by the new PON and optical infrastructure beneath them.

Optical transport: Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI) deliver high-density coherent capacity, simplifying network operations and architecture while providing the highest levels of security across the routed core.

Security and analytics: The Nokia Deepfield DDoS security solution (based on Deepfield Defender) embeds DDoS detection and protection directly in the network fabric, ensuring network agility and stable performance under current and future broadband demand. The Deepfield part of the solution also provides network observability and analytics through Deepfield Cloud Intelligence.

The result is a strong Nokia-based network foundation across all technologies: fixed access, IP routing, optical transport, and security.

“This project demonstrates Nokia's leadership and end-to-end capabilities across fixed networks, IP routing, optical transport, and security solutions. With this deployment, altafiber is redefining customer experience, driving operational efficiency, and paving the way for the gigabit broadband era - a triple win.”

Benefits of the solution

Four Nokia domains tie altafiber's multi-gigabit expansion together end-to-end:

  • Fixed access - Nokia Lightspan 25G PON enables altafiber to rapidly scale services, introduce differentiated multi-gigabit offerings, and maximize its existing fiber-infrastructure investments, setting a new benchmark for symmetrical multi-gigabit broadband to both residential and business customers.
  • Fixed access - The same fiber plant supports altafiber's growth in the Midwest and underpins Hawaiian Telcom's path to making Hawaii the first fully fiber-enabled US state by the end of 2026, redefining customer experience as the network scales.
  • IP routing – Nokia 7750 Service Routers form the intelligent backbone of the upgraded network, ensuring efficient, resilient, and secure transport of the massive influx of multi-gigabit data generated by the new PON and optical layers below.
  • Optical transport - Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI) deliver high-density coherent capacity that simplifies network operations and architectures, while providing the highest levels of security across the core.
  • Network security and analytics - Nokia Deepfield Defender provides AI-based detection, mitigation orchestration and security analytics, while DDoS enforcement capabilities are built-in, embedded directly in the network fabric, ensuring network agility and stable performance to address current and future broadband demand without rerouting customer traffic through a separate security overlay. Deepfield Cloud Intelligence provides deep analytical insights into the network and services running on it.

The result is a single, integrated foundation in which fixed access, IP routing, optical transport, and security move in lockstep with altafiber's growth ambitions.

“We are pleased to partner with Nokia as we continue to expand our cutting-edge multi-gig PON fiber network into new Midwest territories and across Hawaii. This partnership ensures we can deliver unparalleled speed and reliability to support the growing needs of our customers.”
