Bitė Latvia invests 5 million euros to implement Nokia's latest generation IP network and security technologies
Bitė Latvia becomes the first operator in the Baltics and one of the first in Europe to combine Nokia 800GE routing and Deepfield Defender into an AI-driven, network-wide DDoS security solution that neutralized nearly 4,000 attacks in its first full year
Objective
Bitė Latvia is one of the leading information and communication technology (ICT) service providers in Latvia and part of the BITĖ Group, the largest telecommunications and media group in the Baltic states. The company operates mobile, fixed, broadband, and television services, and following its 2024 merger with Baltcom it became Latvia's leading triple-play operator — voice, mobile and optical internet, and television — serving more than 400,000 customers across more than 1.1 million connections.
Like its Baltic peers, Bitė Latvia operates on the front line of an increasingly hostile cyber environment. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks have become more frequent, larger in volume, and more sophisticated in method — with peaks now measured in hundreds of gigabits per second and the majority of attacks combining multiple vectors to evade single-layer defenses. Protecting Latvian enterprises, public-sector agencies, and consumers against this traffic — at the speed and scale at which it now arrives — has become a baseline expectation for any national carrier.
To meet that expectation, Bitė Latvia committed 5 million euros to the development of its fixed network infrastructure, with the goal of integrating next-generation routing capacity and AI-driven DDoS protection into a single, network-embedded ecosystem rather than bolting on a third-party scrubbing service.
Solution
Bitė Latvia selected Nokia as its infrastructure and security partner. The deployment makes Bitė Latvia the first operator in the Baltics — and one of the first in Europe — to combine Nokia 800GE routing technology with Nokia Deepfield Defender into a unified next-generation DDoS security solution.
The solution is built on Bitė Latvia's existing Nokia IP service routing platforms, powered by the FP5 network processor, which delivers high-density, energy-efficient 800GE routing interfaces and acts as the line-rate enforcement point for Deepfield Defender's mitigation actions. Deepfield Defender ingests rich telemetry from the network and correlates it in real time with Deepfield Secure Genome, Nokia's continuously updated cloud-based feed that tracks the security context of more than five billion IPv4 and IPv6 addresses worldwide. Using AI and machine-learning algorithms, Defender detects DDoS attacks the moment they emerge and instructs the FP5 silicon to surgically block malicious traffic at the network edge — without rerouting legitimate traffic to a separate scrubbing center.
Beyond protecting its own infrastructure, Bitė Latvia uses the same Nokia DDoS security platform to offer Deepfield Defender as a managed service to its business customers. Companies in other sectors can therefore access DDoS protection capabilities previously available only to large network operators — without making direct capital outlays themselves.
Benefits of the solution
In its first full year of operation, the Nokia DDoS security solution delivered measurable results for Bitė Latvia:
- Nearly 4,000 DDoS attacks neutralized across the network in 2024 [source: Bitė Latvia announcement, March 2025], protecting Latvian enterprises and public-sector agencies
- Peak attack of 279.58 Gbps mitigated; longest sustained attack ran for nearly three days — handled automatically without service impact
- 69% of attacks were multi-vector (combining methods) and 28% targeted multiple systems simultaneously — exactly the complexity profile that defeats single-layer defenses
- Future-proof 800GE-capable routing on Nokia FP5 silicon — scalable, energy-efficient network capacity ready for 5G-era IP services
- Network-embedded DDoS mitigation eliminates the need for separate scrubbing centers, reducing latency and lowering total cost of ownership
- DDoS-as-a-Service offering enables Bitė Latvia's business customers to access enterprise-grade protection without direct capital outlay, opening a new revenue stream for the operator
By embedding security directly into its IP transport network, Bitė Latvia gives Latvian enterprises, public-sector agencies, and consumers one of the most resilient connectivity foundations in the Baltic region — built on a unified Nokia ecosystem that scales with rising 5G demand and adapts in real time to evolving cyber threats.
