Assessment of the impact of (R)SOA devices in Cascaded Packet Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer nodes

We evaluate the impact of an active device, namely SOA and RSOA, as logic gate in a 10 Gbit/s per wavelength WDM packet-switched network. The fundamental limits coming from the optical amplifier are modelled and different devices are evaluated. Some design rules are found to be essential in order to optimize the number of cascaded packet-blocker-based nodes.
