Tess is a prototype system for automatically producing context free statistical descriptions of a given data set. Tess uses artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to search through the space of all possible descriptions represented as a hierarchy of descriptors. In this paper, we discuss the motivation and formalization behind the Tess system. The accompanying videotape details the implementation and use of the system.
