The quantity employed as a measure of the quality of speech delivered at the end of a telephone circuit is known as the articulation. The paper describes a method of pre-determining the articulation from a knowledge of the circuit constants. The method consists of a determination, for any given case, of which of the frequency components are above threshold at the receiving end. From a general study of speech the relative importance of the different frequency components is determined, and the value of articulation for the circuit can be worked out. The practical application to any case requires about half an hour as compared with about 50 hours required for actual measurement.
