Analog Radio-over-Fibre (RoF) and the transport of digitized radio signals via CPRI (i.e. digital RoF) are two options for future hybrid optical/wireless access networks under discussion nowadays. However, both options have certain flaws. RoF degrades the performance the wireless subsystem is able to achieve (shared SNR budget); CPRI fronthauling is rather bandwidth hungry. Within this publication we propose and evaluate alternative fronthauling schemes enabling cost-efficient and future-proof hybrid optical/wireless access networks without suffering from these flaws. The proposed options are able to follow the trend of site densification without overburdening the optical feeder links and fully support the introduction of intercell cooperation schemes (CoMP).
