DASD-ASSIST: An Expert System for I/O Subsystem Analysis of Mainframe UNIX(R) Systems
01 January 1990
This paper reports on our experience with building and applying a rule-based expert system (ES) to analyze I/O subsystems of large mainframe computers under the UNIX(R) operating system. The ES analyzes weekly performance data of 20 mainframe computers and about 10,000 file systems, and suggests file system moves to minimize the time spent waiting for I/O completion. Optimal file system placement on physical disk can result in improved system efficiency and increased throughput.
