Digital technology has encouraged the combining of traditional switching and transmission disciplines in the modern central office. One of the manifestations of this is the Digital Cross-connect System (DCS). The first DCS was installed in 1981, and since then their deployment has grown rapidly. In June 1985, a Workshop on Digital Cross-connect Systems was held in Banff, Alberta, to bring together users, planners and designers to discuss experience in planning and operating DCSs as well as identify new applications. The papers provided here attempt to share some of the benefits of the workshop with a larger audience. As a result of the strong interest in the continuing evolution of DSCs and positive feedback from the first workshop, a second is scheduled for June 1987 in Banff.
