Electronic materials are the building blocks for the components and devices which compromise modern communications, computation, process control and automation systems. Distributed intelligence, the hallmark of the "information society" is impossible without advanced materials. The second industrial revolution is reordering society and the relative competitiveness of nations even more profoundly than the first. At the root of competitiveness is the availability to a nation of reliable, low cost, high performance electronic materials.
