Distributed intelligence, the hallmark of the "information society" is impossible without advanced materials. The second industrial revolution is reordering society and the relative competitiveness of nations even more profoundly than the first. At the root of competitiveness is the availability to a nation of reliable, low cost, high performance electronic materials.
