The electronic structure of the high T sub c superconducting oxide compounds is discussed. The conventional band picture which leads to a CDW instability is contrasted with the localized Mott-Hubbard picture leading to an AF groundstate for the insulating parent compounds.

The size of the electron interaction parameters is estimated and the nature of the quasiparticles is deduced. Different pairing models for superconductivity are reviewed in ligt of these findings.
