Recently new states of the electromagnetic field, called squeezed states, have been generated at optical frequencies. The utility of such states in reducing the noise of precision and sensitive measurement instrumentation, such as interferometers has already been demonstrated. Such states can also in principle be generated at rf and microwave frequencies.
