A long-reach wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) optical transport network has been modelled using Optsim. The design is implemented over one span of zero-dispersion-shifted fibre (DSF). The design is based on the application of the Lucent Technologies OLS-400G product to the nonrepeatered transport of multiple 2.5 Gbps nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) signals. The effect of four-wave mixing (FWM) is simulated in order to study the tradeoffs between carrier wavelength, transmitter power, channel density, transmission distance, and system performance. The results are compared for various channel configurations and to field data.
