The incorporation of dopants and impurities in the fabrication of optical glass fibers is determined by a complex interaction of phenomena. These include gas phase chemistry, gas transport, particle nucleation, particle growth due to Brownian coagulation, gas-solid chemistry thermophoretic particle transport, diffusion within the particles and viscous sintering of particulate layers.
