Investigating the polarization of an omni-directional patch antenna
01 February 2019
The ever-present need for higher data rates in telecom networks has a profound effect on what is required from the ideal antenna. In Ultra Dense Networks (UDN), for example, the challenge is to find an omnidirectional, yet orthogonally polarized, antenna of reasonable size. For this purpose, a new antenna type, which operates in pairs, is developed. It is demonstrated that this antenna type has enhanced polarization characteristics. It can be scaled to operate at different frequencies. Moreover, the gain of the individual antenna, and thus the pair, can be increased by using more than one radiating element as suggested by array theory. The method of complex polarization ratio is used to analyze the polarization characteristics of the antenna pair and compared to more traditional methods. The antenna is prototyped and tested.
