Low temperature optical dephasing of rare earth ions by tunneling systems in glass.
01 January 1984
Recent photon echo measurements of low temperature optical dephasing of Nd(3+) in SiO2 glass fibers are reviewed. The dephasing of the optical ion in a disordered host below 1K is shown to originate in elastic dipolar interactions with atomic tunneling systems. A spectral diffusion model correctly describes the major features of the echo dynamics.
