We present a method for patterning the location of cells cultured on two-dimensional substrates. The method uses a combination of surface chemistry and photolithographic techniques. The adhesive properties of either silicon or silicon dioxide (quartz) surfaces was controlled by linking small organic molecules to the surface with silane coupling agents. Patterns of selected adhesivity were formed using standard photochemical resist materials and lithographic masking techniques.
