Reflective, Single-Mode, Fiber-Optic, Passive Star Couplers.

A key component in many architectures of high-speed, optical local-area network (LANs) is a single-mode-fiber, passive star coupler. Techniques are known in the literature for constructing transmissive nxn star couplers. e.g., for n equaling an arbitrary power of two, using 3-dB couplers. Such an nxn star can serve as the central node in a n-user LAN, where each user would be connected by two fibers - one for transmission to the input side of the star, and the other for reception from the output side of the star.
