The Contribution to Cross-Phase Modulation in L-Band WDM Systems from Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers

We experimentally compare the levels of cross-phase modulation produced in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to that produced in both dispersion shifted and conventional transmission fiber for a 10 Gb/s WDM system operating in L-band. Our results showed that, for a system with twenty channels, the levels of cross-phase modulation produced by our amplifier was negligible compared to that from the dispersion shifted fiber, and a factor of approximately nine smaller than for the conventional fiber.
