1. INTRODUCTION: The design and synthesis of enzyme models is one of the prime challenges of organic chemistry. Such models make possible the observation in enzymatic reactions of mechanistic details that are often obscured in the enzymew themselves. Futhermore, the increased understanding of enzyme action that is gained by the study of enzyme models might lead to the tailoring of artificial enzymes to carry out reactions other than those associated with biochemical processes.
