A distributed database is a collection of data which logically belongs to the same system but is physically located and possibly replicated at different sites. These sites typically are located in a network which is interconnected by a communication subsystem. A well-administered distributed database system can offer some important advantages over centralized databases. Among these are improved performance, increased reliability and availability, and reduced communication overhead [CePe84].
