The Evolutions Towards Spectrum Sharing

Spectrum management that results in higher spectral efficiency is required due to the increasing demand for spectrum. This paper gives an overview of different approaches to spectrum sharing, and presents a case study involving a hierarchical co-channel macro- and pico-cell scenario. Simulation results of the scenario show the feasibility of implementing a private commons approach to spectrum sharing in a near term, commercial application. Finally, a roadmap for evolution towards spectrum sharing is put forward.
