The theoretical limit on the noise performance of an avalanche photodiode is the generation of no noise. This can be achieved by an ideal photomultiplier and under these conditions the signal to noise ratio remains unaltered after amplification. We propose here the principle of RANDOM MULTIPLICATION with which one can go beyond the limits of the ideal photomultiplier and achieve signal to noise ratio enhancement after amplification.
