The Representation of Tone in Tokyo Japanese (NOT KNOWN IF PUBLISHED BECAUSE AUTHOR HAS LEFT AT&T)
In this paper, we describe an extensive series of experiments on the properties of fundamental frequency (f0) contours in Tokyo Japanese. These experiments were designed to reveal how lexical accent interacts with prosodic organization to determine the f0 contours of complex utterances. Previously, we have described a computer program for synthesizing f0 contours based on our results (Beckman and Pierrehumbert, 1986). Here, we concentrate on the ramifications of the results for phonological theory.
