The synthesis and peculiar properties of InMo6S(8-x)Se(x), TlMo6S(8-x)Se(x), and Hg(y)Mo6S(8-x)Se(x).

We report the low temperature synthesis and properties of the rhombohedral Chevrel phases InMo6S(8-x)Se(x), TlMo6S(8-x)Se (x) and Hg(y)Mo6S(8-x)Se(x). In contrast to all other known Chevrel phases, InMo6S(8-x)Se(x) shows a large change in rhombohedral angle near x=6 at 300K. We show that this anomalous behavior is associated with temperature induced structural phase transitions that exist for all x.
