The combination of Density Functional Theory and Pseudopotential Theory has been successfully applied to the description of point-defects in semiconductors. Characteristic features of such defects are that local electronic states couple strongly to local lattice distortions and also exhibit sizeable Coulomb interaction effects. This can lead to exotic features such as "negative U" behavior and electronically enhanced atomic migration.
