Valency in Clusters with Strong Chemical Bonding.

This paper reviews simple valence concepts that have relevance to semiconductor and metal clusters. Three examples are discussed: electronic shell structure in alkali metal clusters, the molecular orbitals of icosahedral C sub (60), and the size dependent development of band structure in larger semiconductor clusters. This paper will appear in the Proceedings of the Welsh Symposium on Valency.
