Nokia Saving Lives wins Drones for Good Award
Using technology to make people’s lives better – this is the heart of Nokia’s vision and promise, and it’s how we exercise our social responsibility.
In October last year, Nokia became a member of the GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter, which supports improved access to communication and information for those affected by crisis, to reduce the loss of life and enhance humanitarian response.
A cornerstone project at Nokia supporting this vision is Nokia Saving Lives. The initiative combines mobile communications technology with drones and applications like real-time high-definition video and infrared camera, to enable communications in emergencies or disasters so that first responders can provide the fastest possible response in helping people.
As a fantastic recognition of its potential, Nokia Saving Lives was recently honored to receive the UAE Drones for Good Award in the international category, presented by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
The Award competition, which had over 1,000 submissions from 160+ countries, is dedicated to transforming the technologies behind civilian drones into practical solutions for improving peoples’ lives.
Our end-to-end Nokia Saving Lives initiative is truly unique in the industry. Getting re-connected is one of the first priorities of any rescue operation since networks often break down in disaster situations. With the Nokia Ultra Compact Network, a highly portable LTE network, we can quickly re-establish connectivity with a standalone high-speed LTE network, so that rescue groups can communicate.
On top of this network solution, we deploy video camera-equipped drones to search for people and capture footage from the disaster area – all guided from one control center. The drones stream video and other sensor data in real time from the disaster site back to control. They provide valuable inputs like the exact locations of people and how to reach them, with thermal cameras, hazardous chemical sensors, and other applications.
The control center analyzes the collected information with Nokia Video Analytics technology and provides insights to responders to help them make decisions and prioritize tasks, making their work more efficient and safer. The plans are to upgrade the drones’ airtime to over two hours in the coming months, and increase the artificial intelligence of the whole solution.
As earthquakes, violent storms, and other disasters will continue to be an unfortunate part of our lives, we want to be ready to use Nokia Saving Lives in real-life emergencies when the need arises. So the next step is to work closely with rescue teams to refine our concept. We will have trials with several global and national relief organizations this year, to make sure that the technical concept fits their needs.
Along with NGOs, we look to collaborate with governments, and operators too. Working with other network providers to use their LTE spectrum in natural disaster situations for rescue operations will help increase the reach of Nokia Saving Lives. With our Ultra Compact Network we can create an isolated network on its own and allow the drones to go further.
Nokia Saving Lives is a very good example of our open innovation approach, and shows the extraordinary things we can achieve when key players collaborate openly and innovate together. It shows how innovation can save lives when different technologies combine their potential. No one can do it all alone, and we want all players involved to make Nokia Saving Lives the best possible solution for worldwide rescue and catastrophe operations.
I can’t say it better than our CEO, Rajeev Suri said at Mobile World Congress 2017, where Nokia Saving Lives was demonstrated: “When we create the technology that delivers better lives… then we can do good business, and do good too.”
This is Nokia innovation solving connectivity problems to make people’s lives better. Enabling communications, improving emergency response, and saving lives. This is technology at the service of people.
