Nokia redoubles its commitment to equality and inclusion

It’s vital for corporates like Nokia to step up our commitment to equality and inclusion. So I’m pleased to share news of where Nokia is on that journey: both how we’re succeeding and where we still have work to do.

I’m proud to say that the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation has awarded Nokia the highest possible score of 100% on the 2021 Corporate Equality Index. On this ranking you see employers from nearly every industry and region of the United States listed – including us. This designates Nokia as a “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality”.

It’s also a pleasure to announce that Nokia scored 71.5% and ranked second in the recently published Nordic Business Diversity Index ‘Large Cap Company’ category. This compares all 2020 Nasdaq listed companies in Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen based on their diversity in the Executive Board and Board of Directors across gender, age, nationality and educational background. Both results show that Nokia is well on track on many inclusion fronts.

However, we also had a reality-check from Bloomberg, which included Nokia for the third time in a row in its Gender and Equality Index (GEI). This year we scored 64.73%: just slightly under the 66.32% average for the 38 technology companies included in the overall list. That’s a slight drop on last year’s ranking, highlighting the work we still need to do around creating a gender-inclusive culture and a stronger female talent and leadership pipeline. I’m already collaborating closely with our leadership team to identify and start delivering the changes needed to quickly regain that ground.

We are passionate about making our business a place of ‘psychological safety’ where all our people feel free to express their thoughts, questions and concerns without fear of embarrassment, hostility or risk.

Success on all fronts starts with creating a truly inclusive culture that embraces and promotes people of all sexes, ages and nationalities, with different abilities, religious beliefs and sexual orientation. And while we still have work to do, the whole picture does show that Nokia really is progressing towards creating work spaces where everyone is equally rewarded and feels safe to be their true, authentic selves.
