Telecom mediation
Mediation platform for data center consolidation
What is Telecom mediation?
Telecom mediation enables data consolidation across any network type and data source. The data may contain information about connectivity service usage, connected devices, application usage, device location, i.e., many different types of services provided by the network. The consolidated data is provided to various OSS/BSS systems for consumption.
Telecom mediation platforms refine the data and send it to any target application, increasingly in real time. This allows service providers to utilize and monetize vast amounts of data available in digital operating environments. Openness is also becoming more important, and CSPs are looking for vendor and technology-agnostic solutions.
What is the role of Telecom mediation?
BSS mediation
BSS mediation remains the cornerstone of existing communication networks. It delivers aggregated and consolidated service usage data from the network to CSP billing and other BSS/IT systems.
The CSP requirement is to have a unified system for consolidating usage data from various sources, normalizing it, transforming it, enriching it, and delivering it to the appropriate destination systems. Data sources can be for example 3GPP defined network functions in different domains (5G/4G/IMS core), charging systems, enterprise applications, and IoT devices.

Data mediation, heading towards Autonomous Networks
Telecom mediation is expanding from traditional BSS mediation towards supporting the TMF-driven Autonomous Networks framework. According to the TMF Benchmark report for Autonomous Networks (December 2024), 96% of the responders see complex data integration as a key challenge to implementing Autonomous Networks.
Nokia mediation is leading this transition with its capability to implement an efficient data mediation layer, consolidate network data, and provide “single source of truth” to various Autonomous Network applications, including security, assurance, and analytics/AI.
With Nokia mediation, data is integrated once and can be used instantly by multiple applications with the philosophy “Deploy once – utilize multiple times.”

What are the challenges with Telecom mediation?
Today, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) face challenges in processing siloed data from multiple systems, supported by different hardware architectures, and maintained by varied and complex tools.
These challenges drive up costs and slow down the time to market for both launching new services and generating new revenue. Specific Telecom mediation challenges include:
Network data complexity
CSPs need better capabilities to build automation and, in the future, more autonomy in network operations and the BSS. This requires the ability to tap into diverse network data: RAN, Core, transport, IP, usage, telemetry, applications, and cloud infrastructure.
Automation enables CSPs to build future service offerings in a TCO-efficient manner, provide time-to-market/value, and deliver a seamless customer experience.
As monetization and operations use cases increasingly rely on a consolidated view of the data, it has become imperative for CSPs to build efficient network data management.
Data volume
Data volumes in the network layer are increasing rapidly due to the implementation of 5G Core, and observations of a tenfold increase in consumption-related data volumes (compared to 4G ePC) are possible. The consumption-related data is generated by smartphone users, IoT, telemetry, network assurance KPI counters, device security log transfers, etc.
This creates new requirements to manage, aggregate, and correlate the data for various OSS and BSS applications in a unified manner, to provide a consolidated view to monetize, assure, and secure the services.
Real-time access
To efficiently monetize and promote new services, CSPs need real-time access to service usage data. This information enables real-time triggering based on predefined rules to let associated systems, such as campaign management, know the optimal moment to send the right promotion. Streaming data requires operating networks in a more automated way to detect potential anomalies or service quality issues, and the ability to act immediately on service degradation situations.
Introduction of new use cases
The role of mediation is expanding from conventional usage mediation towards data mediation to cover new types of use cases. For example, there could be automated and more autonomous operations, security assurance, service assurance, and intelligent analytics, all supported by AI. This would require efficient network mediation and data management implementation across various domains.
Telecom mediation use cases
Telecom mediation can enable several advanced use cases that help CSPs to prepare and exploit new monetization opportunities.
BSS/Network mediation
BSS/Network mediation ensures the delivery of accurate, auditable usage and billing data with no loss or duplication. These use cases include Converged Billing Mediation, Network Mediation (a 3GPP-driven Charging Gateway function), and Enterprise Mediation, which supports connectivity and enterprise service monetization, analytics, and business intelligence.
Data mediation
In data mediation, the scope extends beyond data collection, enabling real-time analysis for network performance, analytics, assurance, and security. Use cases include QoE monitoring (e.g., voice, video streaming) and analytics for fibre and mobile services.
Service assurance
CSPs want to enhance key network and service KPIs that boost customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. This is done through service assurance across RAN and Core networks. Mediation can provide the data for performing root cause and service impact analysis to minimize service degradation.
Nokia mediation processes and unifies network data, including fault, performance, and telemetry information, in real time for assurance applications such as Nokia Assurance Center.
Customer experience
CSP would benefit from a 360° QoE view for Mobile and Fixed / FTTx services, especially for those subscribers / customers with a service bundle. For this, an automated detection of service degradations and anomalies in customer experience would be needed.
This can be achieved by monitoring service continuity utilizing Nokia Analytics together with the data provided by Nokia mediation.
Security assurance
Security is increasingly important in today’s network environments. CSPs need immediate and accurate information from network resources to ensure service continuity and privacy. Mediation can provide security logs, telemetry, and selected FM / PM data in a consolidated manner for security assurance applications.
