Invent with Nokia
Submit your invention, simply and securely
How to submit an idea
We have two routes for submitting ideas. Take our General route and initially your submission will be non-confidential until it’s passed our initial review. At this point you’ll join our confidential Privileged route.
When you register, you can request to join the Privileged route immediately – or you could be invited directly by Nokia to use this route. Importantly, your idea will be protected by our portal’s automatic security features, whichever route you take.
General route (public)
After you register, you’ll use a template to submit your idea. If your idea’s approved or we’d like more detailed information to review it, we’ll sign a confidentiality agreement. Then you’ll move to our Privileged route for a detailed invention report.

Privileged route (confidential)
Register or promoted to privileged route, you’ll submit a detailed invention report to make a case for our expert review. In this route, you’ll be able to view terms & conditions, select financial awards, upload documents, interact with our experts and move through the process more quickly.
If accepted, your invention will be filed as a patent application. You’ll be named in this as inventor and rewarded financially for transferring the IP rights to Nokia. Plus you’ll be funded and supported by us throughout the whole patenting process.

Can I submit drawings or presentations describing my idea?
Yes, if we approve your idea at the initial review stage. When you first share your idea with us through the General route, it should be non-confidential information only and you’ll describe it in words. If we can see its potential, you’ll join the confidential Privileged route and will give us the full story. You’ll complete a new template that will let you submit a detailed description of your invention, plus supporting figures, images and presentations.
Why would my idea not get accepted?
Sometimes not enough information is provided for us to assess the potential of an idea. We need the details to evaluate its feasibility and commercial value. In this case we generally ask you to share more information in a new submission.
We also reject inventions because they’re too similar to something that already exists. This is known as ‘the existence of prior art in the public domain.’ Unless they’re original, ideas aren’t patentable.
Finally, we reject ideas that don’t fit with our vision and strategy. We accept some ‘out of domain submissions’. But most sit within our key areas of interest.
How can I improve my chance of getting my submission accepted?
Do a thorough internet search before you submit your idea. If you find something similar already exists, we almost certainly will too. The more original and less familiar your idea is, the more chance there is that we’ll approve it for patenting.
How will Nokia decide the value of my submission?
Our products are normally composed of multiple inventions. This makes it very hard to predict the value of an invention when it isn’t patented. What’s more, we don’t know what claims will be allowed by patent offices when the patent is granted.
Sometimes final patent claims aren’t as broad and useful as we initially anticipated. This happens despite thorough internal analysis before the patent application is filed. That is why, we’ll give you two standard offers to choose from for every invention you submit.
If we feel that a General submission has potential, we’ll promote you to the Privileged route. At this point, you’ll be able to see these standard offers.
