Interview and resume tips & tricks
To get started on your application, you’ll need a standout resume. Our Talent Attraction Team has put together some tips to help you get started.
- Research the company: review resume examples for your industry. Learn more about the company and the role you are applying for.
- Consider using templates: templates can help you to organize your resume well. You can find plenty of free professionally designed resume templates online.
- Resume length: aim for a concise and well-structured document. Typically, early career candidates can fit their resume onto one page, whereas individuals with more extensive experience may need two pages. Make sure to include only the most relevant information.
- Opening statement: start your resume with an opening statement, a brief and compelling introduction that emphasizes your career objectives.
- Achievements and strengths: include your greatest achievements and strengths using bullet points. Try to quantify them, e.g., instead of saying "I'm good at identifying and resolving software bugs" say "As part of a student project team X, I successfully identified and resolved 20 software bugs, significantly enhancing the project's functionality and reliability."
- Transferable skills: don't overlook the importance of your transferable skills - abilities you can apply across various jobs and industries, not tied to specific technical knowledge (e.g., problem-solving, teamwork). Share examples from your academic or extracurricular activities where you successfully applied these skills. It will help you to demonstrate your potential to succeed in the role, even with limited professional experience.
- Tailor for each job: customize your resume for each job application by spotlighting experiences and skills relevant to the specific job requirements.
- Education: include details of your education and your availability.
- Spell and grammar check: proofread and edit if needed. Use spelling and grammar-checking apps to detect mistakes.
- Seeking feedback: ask someone you trust to provide an objective perspective on your resume. They might share with you some additional valuable suggestions.
Here are some tips to prepare you for the interview so you can land the job.
- Research the company and interviewer(s): read about the company's values, mission, and products/services it delivers.
- Review your resume and the job description: take a closer look at the job requirements – these are areas you will be asked about during the meeting.
- Think about your experience: think about the examples from the past that could confirm that you have the right skills and be prepared to share them during the interview. Please remember that even if you do not have extended professional experience, you may still have valuable competencies for the role. Consider using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your responses.
- Define your achievements: are you proud of something that happened during your studies? Share it during the meeting with the recruiters.
- Think about your motivation: why have you applied? What would you like to do? What are your financial expectations and availability?
- Prepare a list of questions to ask the interviewer(s): that will not only help determine if the position is the best fit for you, but it will also demonstrate your engagement. Think about what would you like to know about the role, the team, or the company culture.
- In case of a virtual interview, take care of the convenient space: test your connection and make sure you are in a quiet, uninterrupted area. Close the unnecessary tabs in your browser to limit the possible interruptions and mute your phone. Prepare for turning your camera on - clean up your background (room and desk) or use MS Teams backgrounds before putting your camera on.
- Prepare to take notes: take a pen and notepad to write down the details about the job during the interview which may be important for you to make the final decision. Don’t count on your memory.
- Dress for success!
- Take care of yourself: grab a glass of water, try to relax, and join the meeting with a positive attitude.
