Background

From November 11th through to November 22nd, world leaders will meet in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the UN's annual climate change conference, also known as the ‘Conference of the Parties’ or ‘COP 29’ to seek ways to accelerate climate action. The aim of the COP process is for governments to agree on concrete steps to address climate change.

A series of days are dedicated specific topics including energy, nature, and education. For the first time, there will also be a day dedicated to digitalization, recognizing the important role that digital can play in combating climate change. Nokia will be a part of this COP to continue to drive the dialogue on the critical role of technology and digitalization in combating climate change as well as discussing the positive impact of technology on industries and society (the handprint of digitalization), as well as the importance of constantly minimizing the footprint of the technology itself by looking to break the traditional links between the growth in data and growth in energy use.

Networks play a critical role in realizing the full potential of digital and driving climate action

Networking technologies such as digital twins, low latency connectivity, analytics and AI can help hard-to-abate sectors find ways to accelerate sustainability efforts. Digitalization can play a role in supporting all industries on their decarbonization journey. At the same time, to ensure the benefits of digitalization continue to outweigh the climate impacts of digital infrastructure, the digital industry must also continually reduce its own footprint.

Collective action is required

We work with a range of stakeholders and look for where we can increase collaboration and respond to requirements in building sustainable solutions.

Collaboration is key to moving the needle on many sustainability topics – from protecting the environment to bridging the digital divide. In that spirit, Nokia will be present at a series of events during COP 29.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of some of these events.
