SecureSoC strengthens Finland's future in secure semiconductor technologies
Tampere University has launched SecureSoC, a three-year, €6.7 million Business Finland collaboration with Insta, Nokia, VLSI Solution, Wapice, Xiphera and TTTech Flexibilis. The project is in its opening phase: after the June 2026 kick-off, the consortium is starting research and co-innovation, building on SoC Hub and a new official OpenTitan research partnership.
The aim is to develop security-by-design system-on-chip technologies, with virtual environments and AI-assisted methodologies, for critical systems in industry, defence, automation and other sectors. Partners will advance digital and analogue components toward commercial readiness and create an evaluation framework for Finland’s semiconductor IP roadmap and marketplace.
This matters because the EU Cyber Resilience Act will require hardware-level cybersecurity for network-connected products by 2027. Quantum computing and geopolitical uncertainty threaten today’s cryptography and supply chains. Secure chips are becoming as essential to digital sovereignty as networks and software.
Beneficiaries include Finnish industry and semiconductor talent, operators of critical infrastructure who need a chain of trust from silicon to application software, and European customers who must meet CRA rules.
Concrete impact includes faster SoC design and verification, domestically produced high-assurance hardware, quantum-secure protection for edge devices, and reusable IP that strengthens cybersecurity, security of supply and long-term semiconductor expertise in Finland.
